Pest Prevention

We have been in business for over 30 years and along the way we have accumulated a wealth of experience and expertise that we would like to share with you. The best way to deal with pests is to prevent them.

Prevention methods include

  • Seal cracks especially around pipes, washers, dryers, walls and ceilings. Ensure good seals are maintained around plumbing and electrical outlets. Doors should be fitted with good weather strips. Both doors and windows should seal well when closed. Check regularly for rips and tears.
  • The simplest form of pest control is to remove their food supply and breeding areas. Keep garbage secure, covered and regularly wash out containers. This prevents flies from breeding and ants will be also less attracted to your home.
  • Compost wherever possible.
  • Prevent the accumulation of various forms of rubbish throughout the property. Clean any waste that has been spilled, particularly pet food. Eliminate all damp areas where possible.
  • Avoid leaving outside lights on that will attract moths and other insects. Sensor lights are both effective and convenient.
  • Keep branches and bushes trimmed and away from the house. Rodents and other pests can be excluded from your home by permanently closing entrance holes with chalking, steel wool or structural repairs.
  • If you are storing wood, keep it raised of the ground and a minimum of 10 metres from the house.
Pest prevention Cockroaches

Cockroaches

  • Cockroach control is essential for health and safety. Many allergies and even asthma is often attributed to cockroach saliva, droppings and decomposing bodies throughout the home.
  • Cockroaches are highly adaptable and can survive in conditions that other insects cannot. This adaptability makes them resilient and difficult to control. As they migrate to other areas of your home if food and water are not available, it is essential to keep your home clean. Frequently sweep and vacuum especially after meals and clean under appliances. Keep lids on rubbish and remove pet bowls between meals.
  • Kitchen and bathrooms are the main trouble spots as they supply both food and water. Avoid leaving standing water anywhere and remove damp areas wherever possible.
  • Cracks and crevices are problem areas where cockroaches will live and breed. Chalk all of these areas.
  • As cockroaches are difficult to detect, it is necessary to spray your home regularly even if you do not see them running around. The more proactive you are about maintaining pest control in your home, the less likely that cockroaches will return.

Pest prevention fleas

Fleas

  • Frequent vacuuming will help to remove dust, human hair as well as fibre from carpet and rugs, which are critical components to the protection and camouflage of the flea pupae.
  • It is also necessary to maintain lawns and gardens to provide fewer hiding places and food sources for unwanted flea infested wild life and rodents.
  • Regular indoor vacuuming is also recommended and concentrating on areas where pets sleep will help prevent fleas spreading to other areas of the home. It is also advisable to use the necessary products to remove fleas from your pets.

Pest prevetion spiders

Spiders

  • Spiders can enter the home through cracks and other openings. Regular vacuuming and sweeping of windows, corners of rooms, storage areas and other locations that are not frequently used will help to remove spiders and their webs.
  • Another simple prevention method is to always seal cracks around the home. Always store boxes inside away from the walls and off the floor to eliminate potential nesting areas.
  • Outside, it is important to eliminate places for spiders to hide and build their webs by keeping areas free of rubbish and vegetation.

Pest prevention ants

Ants

  • Ants are the number one pest and can be a reoccurring nuisance. Usually living under ground in colonies, ants will eat any type of food but are more attracted to sweet food.
  • Always store sweet and grain foods and pet food in glass with good seals. Place pet food in ‘moats’ to prevent ants using your pet’s meals as a food source.

Pest prevention - Bees and wasps

Bees and wasps

  • Although the honey bee is a very necessary and beneficial insect, unfortunately both bees and wasps can be a threat to human health. Every year people die from wasps and bee stings that are mostly due to allergic reactions.
  • The critical element of bee and wasp control is to destroy the nest.
  • In some instances, attempting to destroy a nest can become a greater health risk that simply tolerating and avoiding it. Nests however especially those of social species should be destroyed if they are close enough to humans to pose a sting threat.
  • It is difficult to manage these on your own and it is best to contact a licensed pest control expert to eradicate the nest.

Pest prevention - Rodents

Rodents

  • Throughout the world, rodents and mice can spread over 35 diseases. These diseases can spread directly to humans by handling rodents, as well as contact with rodent faeces, urine or saliva or through rodent bites.
  • Disease carried by rodents can also be spread to humans indirectly through mites, ticks or fleas that have fed on infected rodents.
  • The main strategy for preventing human exposure to rodent disease is effective rodent control in and around the home. This is achieved by removing any food sources, sealing even the smallest of entries into your home and successfully trapping the rodents in and around your home.
  • It is known that a mouse can squeeze through a hole the size of 5 cents and a rat can enter a hole the size of a twenty-cent piece. Prevent rodents from entering your home by checking inside and outside the house for gaps or holes.
  • It is crucial to seal the following areas that can all be used as possible entry points.

Pest prevention - Silverfish

Silverfish

  • Capable of thriving in most climates, silverfish prefer dark, damp areas and are especially attracted to paper and damp clothing often found in stored boxes and garages.
  • Silverfish feed on carbohydrates, especially sugar and starches, glue in books, linen, silk and dead insects. They are nocturnal and can survive in any environment.
  • An effective way to manage silverfish is to control the humidity. Another tip is to always inspect any second hand books and any cardboard that enters the home.
  • Careful housekeeping practices may prevent an infestation by removing potential feeding sites.

Pest prevention - Carpet Beetle

Carpet beetles

  • If they are not properly controlled, carpet beetles can potentially damage natural fibres, fur, leather and other animal products. Unlike other fabric pests such as cloth moths, carpet beetle larvae is highly mobile and may travel to other properties.
  • Frequent vacuuming and professional cleaning of carpets is recommended. It is necessary to clean behind doors, under furniture and air conditioners to remove as much lint as possible.
  • If you notice carpet damage, call a licensed pest management technician as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
